Artists
All right... I'm thinking of offering posters/postcards, or at least creating a proper drawn banner for Tales of Pneuma. These would be con offerings as well.
The problem? I have no idea where to find proper artists who might do the work for a pittance. Who do you guys use? Where do you find your artists? Scouring deviantart for properly-proportioned bodies starts getting tiring after the third day of it.
Irk and I do our own art. ^^;; I know a lot of other artists, too, but I don't know if any of them exactly qualify as a "pittance". What do you consider a pittance?
I do love your sample, Nancy!

Yay!
Artists are listed in the Professional Services category in the Resources section; those of you who know/recommend artists, PLEASE add them to those listings!
That said, I use Alice Fox and highly recommend her. Her prices are reasonable and her work is topnotch. Tell her I sent you.
Pittance = average of 100 USD
We're able to do something for less than $100, though more details would be needed to determine what that something is. Just email whoever you're interested in using. <3
Gail Southworth (southabi@gmail.com) is the artist I used for the illustrations of:
I think Gail's work is awesome!
_windy I feel really embarrassed asking this question but what do you mean by offering posters/postcards? Are they like e-cards? Or are they something physical for an online shop?
Nancy - I LOVE your sample too - awesome
I was thinking of selling physical postcard-packs; they'd be something to bring to cons as well.
Thanks for your kind words, Milady.
At cons postcards do well, but I find people like bookmarks more. (You can also cut more bookmarks from a single piece of paper, so it's a little more cost-effective.) Also, note cards and con badges. Both bookmarks and postcards work really well for passing around for free at any occasion. Small enough to put into a purse or pocket and sturdy enough to survive the trip in either.
I learn so much from posts like these
Oh! Something else people love in general and especially love at cons is little 1" pins/buttons. Especially in person they're a common impulse buy. It's a bonus if they're funny or have some unique design on them that people want to grab up.
These take an investment if you want to do them yourself - I'm gonna get a button-making machine someday, I swear, and just mint these things by the hundreds.
The most memorable promo thing I've ever received from an author was for Sizzling Scribes (erotica group). They had little tealight candles bagged up with each business card. It was so cute!
Those are AWESOME ideas! I'm going to do bookmarks for Orycon, though I don't know where I'll put them. I don't think I'm going to be doing that reading; I'm too pissed off by the whole thing, but that's another discussion.
Let's start a hand-out thread and move discussion there. [Note to self: install comment mover.]

I hired Brian Goff for the SLB character illustration. IMO $50 for a high-quality graphic that can be used in multiple ways is well worth the money.
Char and Irk take commissions, too. See their price table.
I'm willing to do commissions for typographic-only artwork (sample), or if you have stock photos/illustrations to work from. It's $10 each for the former.
