Here is where we share our tips on places to promote or buy advertising. If we'd like, at least. I think everyone knows about Web Fiction Guide and such, so I was hoping we could all point each other towards places that nobody knows of yet, or thought to advertise on. I'm trying to focus on places that aren't traditionally used to advertise weblit.

I use Project Wonderful to advertise Peacock King. Webcomics get me some good returns oftentimes, especially if I cooked up some visually enticing ads. I try to stick to genres that compliment Peacock King, so I go for fantasy, dark fantasy, humor, steampunk... stuff along those lines. If I like the comic I probably advertise on it. Red String is running for a lot but I'll buy $1 worth and get a few good hours worth of clicks on it every now and then. I go for anime/manga type comics since our PK artwork has a heavy anime/manga influence.

I like places with a lot of visitors where I can buy advertising for a whole month. That's pretty hard to find since most websites with a lot of visitors are part of ad networks, but occasionally there's a jewel. One is (NOT WORK SAFE) http://yaoi.y-gallery.net/ - y!gallery. Peacock King has a lot of attractive guys and some gay romance in it, so it appeals to the audience of y!g. There's two adspaces they're selling for right now. Last time I got adspace on y!g it gave a LOT of return and got us some regular visitors that comment and live and breathe and everything!

One I'm going to try soon is (NOT WORK SAFE) http://adultfanfiction.net/ . I like their prices and the banners rotate and repeat pretty steadily when I refresh, so I'm pretty sure if I have an ad up for a month it'll get a lot of views.

y!g and AFF.net have something in common - they are havens for online fandoms. Online fandoms do fanfiction, and fanfiction is EFFING HUGE on the internet. It is more widespread than regular fiction on the internet. And fanfic readers already read on the internet regularly, often for long stories that come in installments. They also interact with writers, do artwork, have very fun discussions, and on the whole make for valuable readers. I started out in fanfiction so I am familiar with these people, and can blend in among their kind like ninja!

Err, anyway, fanfiction forums and sites are a good place to try for promotion.

That's all I can think of at the moment, but I have a veritable FOREST of links I've been building up and I'll share them later on in this thread. Anybody else got something to share?

I've picked up some followers by using various hashtags on Twitter. #amwriting is a really good one; I've doubled my following in two weeks with that one.

I had a link to a great article on the best use of hashtags for self-promotion, but, of course, I didn't save it. I'll try to find it.

I'm also making sure that I blog more often; at least once per week. I'm not the kind to put my life out there for everyone, but I have to be honest and acknowledge that people are nosey and want to be in my business. I don't put everything out there, of course, but I try to come up with bits about how I'm doing, my writing status, pimp some other sites I like, etc. Grabs that human interest crowd.

Sharon, I am trying #amwriting on my tweets... see how it works for me... thx.

Here's a whole page of directories, etc. from the e-fiction book club (who are doing The Philosopher in Arms in November): http://efictionbookclub.wordpress.com/where-to-find-e-fiction/ .

For sff writers: I was surfing around when I came across this huge long list of blogs that review sff. I don't know how many of them do weblit, but if they don't, perhaps we can talk them into it... http://reviewarchive.iblog.my/2009/09/03/news-blogs-that-review-speculat...

Not sure if this should go here, our if I should start a new thread, but...

I had a 'yay!' today on twitter. On #dnchat on Thurs we were discussing non-traditional groups to market to and I mentioned cohousing sites for my 'GURD 2108' story as it features cohousing concepts. Anyways, one of my readers & twitter followers in a cohousing coach - and today when I logged on & checked my @'s I noticed he had tweeted a link to GURD 2108.

Yay! Laughing out loud

So... the expansion of this - try advertising with people/ places related to concepts in your novel! Laughing out loud

Is weblit.us registered with the google and yahoo directories? I know it takes awhile for that to kick in, but it's very powerful.

Just ran into this. It's designed for print books, looks like, But I don't see anything to keep you from putting up a sample chapter, then linking to your serial site.

OOPS...requires an ISBN. So only good if you have a book or ebook out.

How many people here are using places like Author's Den or RedRoom, etc. to promote their projects?

I was using RedRoom for a while, but just ran out of time; I could either write, or do stuff at RedRoom that got me perhaps six views *at RedRoom* that rarely translated into click-throughs. I may try again once the book is done.

And I think you forgot to put what it was you ran into.
