Interview with David Wong of "John Dies at the End"
Barri's interviews keep getting more interesting every time out. This time she does David Wong, whose blog "John Dies at the End" has been published by St. Martin's press. And that, as she puts it, isn't even the really amazing news.
Thanks for the link.
Good stuff in there. will re-read and take notes.
Lol, Linton! I think that because I usually read your post at the webfiction guide, I don't check it out again here. But I'm sure there's some non-overlapping people here who appreciate the links.
Me and David Wong, we're like this:
Fuzzy picture, yes - my name's in the back of the hardback edition of JDatE, under the list of hardcore fans. He signed my book David Wang, and drew a little skull with a hat on it. Best cover ever, btw: http://twitpic.com/kuxwq http://twitpic.com/kv0go
Anyway, I didn't really like the interviewer's envious tone there, something I already mentioned in WFG. If you're going to ask someone a favor by taking time out for an interview, give them the benefit of acting a little bit more polite.
The only other reason I didn't comment was because I've been reading JDatE since 2003, so not only did I already know this stuff, I watched it happen. David Wong is a man who has my respect. He was giving away copies of the CafePress book when it came out to forumers who said they couldn't afford it. The Cafepress copies were priced to barely make any money, if any at all. (CP's POD book-printing was expensive and shoddy, btw - not recommended.) He just wanted them to be able to read it, and he appreciated their comments and support in the old Pointless Waste of Time forum. (It's the cracked.com forum now.) David Wong has always interacted directly with his readers. He takes comments on everything and allows criticism of all kinds. He has always been honest, even about disagreeing with people in the debate forum. I think the reason I've stuck by him all these years is because he has been so dang on the level. He's really weirded out by establishing himself as a platform - he prefers his writing to sell his writing, not his image. We in the PWoT/Cracked forums have loved that. He has never acted bigger than his britches and he has always been a real guy. He's why Peacock King is on the internet at all, BTW - he inspired me to do WebLit.
Also, I just cashed the check he sent me as payment for saying all that and pimping him out.
There is no "envious tone" there. You are reading that into it. I said that on WFG and will repeat it here, since you are. I see no lack of politeness... that follows from your projection that there is some "envious tone". A perception that seems to be yours alone.
It's an interesting interview, nicely done. Get over and stop running around badmouthing it, how about? What purpose does it serve?
Okay,
A) You asked why people weren't responding, she told you. You can't very well complain that you got the answer you were looking for.
B) in taking the time to read the interview, I can see where Irk could read envious tone into a lot of that - or flat-out snark.
B.1) Tone is subjective. Telling us "there is no tone there" is condescending at the very best.
B.1.a) For all that you complain about being jumped on over here, you'd think you'd mind your own house first and stop jumping all over people who disagree with you. "Get over it and stop running around badmouthing" is nothing but pushy & rude.
C) Posting links? Cool. Whining when "Nobody is interested?" Silly, and less cool, and kind of pushy. Dunno about the rest of everyone, but I have a day job, a husband, a side job, and a web novel I'm writing. It might take me a few days to click a link - patience, grasshopper.
~Lyn, who is in NO way a morning person.
I get tired of the negativism from that poster on anything I post. So sorry.
I didn't say "there is no tone" I said "there is no ENVIOUS tone". Do YOU think there is an "envious tone" that is "impolite" in this interview?
Nobody noticed the post, I bumped and and here people are, immediately. The post, for some reason, did not appear on the list of new posts. So, is that so uncool?
And no, that is definitely and emphatically NOT why "people" are not responding. She is the only one who has this "envy" perception. Like most projections, it tells a story, I would think.
Yes. I think that an envious tone and rudeness could easily be found in that interview. Sorry that wasn't clear enough in my original post.
Lin, I think the negativism both goes both ways, and is at least in part your perception of matters; I think you escalate matters by overreacting, too, to something that may or may not have a tone of negativism (As in the above post; she responded to your question on why no-one had answered with her clear reasons on why she hadn't been that interested. I didn't read it as negative towards you, simply a dislike of the interview.)
As for bumping, I'm not sure about "uncool." It irritates me, but I can't say that that is a general reaction or just me.
~Lyn.
If it hadn't been bumped nobody, including you would have seen it. It didn't appear on the post lists, some glitch, I guess. It doesn't appear there now. Should I have let it just die out.
It seems like something people hear would want to read.
So who is it that's so "envious" here? Barri? Me? Irk, obviously. The hypothetical writers she invoked as a bit of style?
Yeah, I'm sure I over-react. But I get tired of having this character follow me around and dump on anything I post. I'm getting tired of getting nasty PM's from irk and char. Telling me how this forum is "their baby" and how it's important to strike out against "madness" which disagrees with their own ideas.
I have no desire to ugly things up. Though I guess I do. And have probably just sort of had it with this and should just stay away. Several writers I have invited here haven't signed up because they see it as a closed club where they'd be targets of an inner circle that is allowed to bash others if they see fit. They don't want negative comments showing up on their searches.
I just posted that because I thought it was interesting. If it's going to be a problem, where I wish I'd just kept my mouth shut and not posted here, then OK, I won't do it any more.
But I'm going to say this. The idea that there is some sort of negative vibe about Barri's interview is bullshit and nobody would get that from it unless they are trying to write it off. And maybe jealous themselves.
I was going to send you my thoughts on this as a private messaage, but since you're here in public, what the hell, I'll put this public too.
Christ, it's an interview with a guy whose blog got a big contract and movie deal. WTF?
Linton, I haven't responded to any of your posts because of your impressive record as a forum troll and your deceptiveness. Earlier this week he was banned from the Web Fiction Guide forums. This is the last time I'll give you negative attention.
Linton Robinson has at least three other online personas: Cammy May Hunnicutt, Grayson Moran, and Team 2012. You can read all about them at the Ning group Linton has been promoting, http://newwriting.ning.com . The founder of the newwriting group Brewster Nedlum may be another Robinson incarnation, but I as yet have no proof. Hunnicutt, Moran, and Team 2012 also have profiles at Web Fiction Guide. Actually, Cammy May has two (http://webfictionguide.com/?tag=&s=cammy&x=0&y=0).
Evidence that Linton Robinson uses Hunnicutt, Moran, and Team 2012 as sockpuppets:
I received an email (via the Strange Little Band contact form) from Cammy May Hunnicutt (cammymayhunny@gmail.com) inviting me to join the newwriting Ning group. The message was signed "Lin."
On WFG, Grayson Moran is listed as the author of Sky Seeds. Yet Robinson is listed here: http://www.zirdland.com/competition_result.php
There's more. Just do some google searches for the titles of the personas' supposed works.
Indirect evidence: on WFG and the newwriting Ning group, Linton and his personas reply to each other and favorably review each others' works.
In short, beware Linton Robinson. I don't trust him any further than I can throw him.
I guess not. But Cammy forwarded that to you from me and must have left my name on it. Big whoop.
I did a story called Sky Seeds but dumped it. Grayson asked if it would bother me to use the title. Not that titles are protectable, but I thought it was nice. This is all a matter of record on the Sky Tribes forum.
We're all friends. Some of us participate in one way or another in a group weblit project, Mayan Calendar Girls (surprized you missed that one in this little tribunal)
We all work off the same small press and founding NWM was a group effort, just as this is a group effort from people who have weblit on your site.
If somebody decided that you are all figments of each other, then your answering each other here and review each others work would be more "evidence" of that.
The idea that I am writing web novels under three or four different names, thus putting out effort that does nothing for my own brand is an odd one.
I have no reply to the idea that I get banned on forums or that the reason is because I'm a contentious jerk. Or make any apologies for the snit that nitwit Michy pitched. If you're into it, I could include a list of other forums that have kicked me off. I have no problem with it.
I have no hard feelings about your post here, "tenacious". I take issue with the idea of my running some sort of scam here (to whatever purpose) Or that I'm stupid enough to try to con you by making up Cammy May then sending you mail from her with my own name on it. I mean, I may be an asshole, but I'm not stupid.
As far as trust, I guess everybody comes to their own conclusions. And would only say, what is it I'm trying to pull? Is anything I'm doing here so awful or leading people to harm and degradation.
I posted a link to an interview with David Wong. I recommended that people join NWM and Facebook groups. Anybody with any promo experience would immediately see those as good ideas. I have made some suggestions for promotion.
You've gone overboard here and it's kind of rotten to toss out stuff like that on people's record, especially with such flimsy underpinning. But that's okay.
I've been told I should use pseudonyms on forums like everybody else does, but don't see the point.
This is one tough room
By the way, I DO publish some stuff under noms du plume. The Snorklebum website and book (currently out of print) and Mexican Slang 101 as "Cabo Bob". I have never made any effort to conceal that, in fact they are listed on my website.
But I have had people put up posts on Mexican forums about how I'm this big scamster with those projects.
Man, sure glad I started THIS thread
Oh, yeah. Cammy has two profiles at WFG because she messed up her registration. Reason I know that is that I messed up mine also and had two profiles there for a couple of days. Chris straightened it out for me. When I saw her double entry, I asked about it and apparently Chris hadn't noticed it.
But hey, evidence for the massive conspiracy theory.
Tame stuff, too. You didn't even get all the stuff about my prison record. I could send you some links if you like.
This is giving me a kind of cool idea for a webnovel, actually.
I'm a bit sad that Barri Stallins is apparently an alias. Because "she" had said she read my work.
And now I'm not quite sure what to do about my membership in the ning new writing comm.
EDIT: I hope that bit about harassing PMs was untrue.
I left the ning writing comm _windy -
We haven't PMed Linton in weeks. He was making that up to incite something, because he can't defend himself with the truth. I PMed Linton when he first joined, explaining why we were so interested in conventions and IRL stuff when we do web-based work. He was being irate on the forums in the beginning when he first joined about how we weren't doing things right, and so I figured I'd privately message him then instead of posting about it in open threads where it was off-topic.
Since then, he's PMed me or Char several times anytime we disagree with him, because he was afraid of arguing too much on public threads where the search results could turn up in Google. He has a problem with his reputation - it doesn't take long to search for "Linton Robinson" and find trouble. Hence every time someone disagrees with him or besmirches one of his names, he asks them to delete the comments.
This morning I found an email from 'Barri' in my inbox about asking me to delete my comments on the David Wong interview sounding 'envious' because she'd asked David Wong about it and he didn't see it being envious. (Quote from Wong: "I don't really read that into it, but you'd have to get them to be more specific about what they don't like. ") Except Barri's email inquiring about this to David Wong was accidentally from the Mayan Calendar Girls email. Whoops!
I'm sorry Linton was dishonest about you, especially when it came to your work. That's just low.
I only sent him one PM as an alternative to responding to him on the forum. I really did just try to avoid talking to him at all.
In my opinion, it's best to leave the community. I didn't join because I didn't want to be associated with Robinson. And there are plenty of other communities out there.
Yeah, I just left New Writing, and I saw most weblit.us members had also left en masse. I thought some of his IRL promotion ideas were interesting, but I'm glad that bit about harassment is untrue. I didn't truly think either of you were harassing people.
As for the email bit, what a ridiculous slip-up! As for my ego, it is battered but will persevere.
Windy, I know more or less what you mean.
Linton said some good things about my writing too.
Yeah, he also made flattering comments about my art. Now I have to worry if I'm going to find any of it tacked, unattributed, on some eye-searing website. XD
I've learned my lesson: accept compliments only when presents are attached.
This is so unfortunate. I skimmed the interview only because Irk said that she admired David Wong. The interview just sounded like a summary of stuff Wong had already said. Something seemed off with that Linton guy. Hopefully he didn't do anything else to ruin the credibility we're all trying to get.

NOBODY here is interested in an interview with a guy whose weblit novel got signed by St. Martins and optioned for a film?
