Can Anyone 'Show' Me How To Use Drupal?
I'm really interested in using Digital Novelist to post my works instead of Wordpress, but as I'm broke, $8.35 an hour only takes me so far, I decided to try to roll my own. However, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. My plan was to ask my boyfriend as he builds websites for a living. I built a website myself...it was using geocities >_<.
If someone could give me a gentle nudge so I can figure it out. What that translate to is, can someone can give me a gentle nudge so my boyfriend can build my website. Please and Thank You.
I will say from personal experience that MeiLin does great tech support for DN.
Well, what I meant by show was just...I guess explain how it works. >_< OK, this is what I know about it so far. I know I need to have 'space' on a web hosting site. Once I have that, I down load the items needed for drupal. Do I need to know HTML to work it? Or will it be more like web site building for dummies? If I need to know HTML, I can coerce my boyfriend into doing that for me. If it's web site building for dummies I'll be OK...after all I was a 'pro' at geocities.
It's not "for dummies" on the admin end. Once it's set up, you're good; there are even WYWIWYG tools you can install to make editing simpler. Most importantly, your provider has to offer MySQL and PHP 5, and allow .htaccess files. It's a PHP front end to a MySQL database back end. Here are the Drupal handbooks.
I should note, if you host with MeiLin on Digital Novelist, MeiLin handles all the downloading and set-up of Drupal. That makes it a much easier process to set up.
Took me less than a day to figure it out and get things up and running.
I did drupal from scratch, and I found it was a huge pain to begin with, but satisfying to learn.
This video was the only reason I managed to install it on my server with any success: http://drupal.org/videocasts/installing-6
Once it's running, you do have an interface to help you structure your website and add content, but you will have to code (a combination of PHP, HTML, and CSS) if you want to create a custom template.
In the web programming and design work I've done, nothing really helped me when it came to understanding drupal's internal workings, so unless your boyfriend has worked with it before, he might not be much better equipped than you are to work with it. As long as you're willing to struggle with it for awhile, use the documentation online, and do a lot of trial and error you should be ok.
MeiLin is probably much better equipped to offer drupal technical support than I am, but I'm happy to answer the questions that I can while you're working on your setup.
The Drupal support I offer is at the DigitalNovelists.com forum; I offer it mainly in public so that I don't have to repeat it too often.
If you know how to IRC, there is a good channel for Drupal support; I end up there often myself.

"Show" you? Not really. If you want a DN site, ping me. We'll work something out.
